My name is Graeme Tucker

I'm 39 years old and I'm married. I also have an extra X chromosome. On November 30th 1998 our daughter was born, and now my wife Liz is pregnant again. This was achieved through Donor Insemination.

About 4 years ago I began the New Zealand Klinefelter Association to help provide information to the parents of XXY boys and XXY men. There seemed to be a major lack of readable information available.

My childhood was quite difficult, not because I had the extra X but because no-one knew I had it and no-one knew how to help boys in my situation. I consider that parents today who discover their boys do have this anomaly prenatally are privillaged. They can, if it is necessary, provide the extra assistance their boys may need.

When I was diagnosed at 17 I was told like most others that I was infertile. That was subsequently born out to be true. Today though this may not be true for all XXY's. New technologies are making even us fertile. When I was 17, I was, according to the only information available, retarded. That was indeed news to me. One time I had great difficulty explaining to a Counselor that I was XXY as she insisted that to be XXY I had to be retarded.

I have since 17 been taking testosterone, that's the hormone my body lacks. I didn't notice any effect of this hormone until I had it's level increased substancially a little over 3 years ago, a little time before I began the New Zealand Klinefelter Association. I had for some years wanted to get an Association going, but I never had enough drive or energy to do so. I think the existance of the NZKA proves the need for the level of testerone I have.

The current Chairperson of the NZKA is 49 and he has never needed to suppliment his testerone. All people with this anomaly are not the same. We are all unique individuals. We all have as much right to be here as anyone else.

NZKA offers an E-mail support group designed and meant specifically for men with this anomaly. If you wish more information on this or anything else please contact me via E-Mail.
