Mary:
I read your letter in "The
Even Exchange". Congratulations for not aborting your child,
even
though he was diagnosed as 47/xxy before birth. I say this
because I am also 47/xxy.
My IQ is 130 and I have a BA in Math and an M.S. in Atmospheric
Science. The
negative effects of KS I have experienced are : late adolescence,
sterility and some joint
problems (torn cartilage in both knees, and a stretched shoulder
capsules in both sides)
The positive effects : I look much younger than my age of 41, and
I don't have to
worry about birth control (I'm single). I did some testosterone
therapy when I was
diagnosed (at about 26) but found I like myself better and got
along with others better
without it.
I had a normal childhood, played
soccer, baseball and basketball in high school, and some
soccer in college before my knee injury (sports-related, as were
some of the shoulder
problems). Without testosterone therapy, my sex drive was low,
but I feel this to be a
benefit. I'm more sensitive and emotional and I think women like
that in me.
DISCLAIMER: Terrin is not advocating with-holding Testosterone treatment from boys and men who need it. Results vary with each individual and while some may do better without there are many who do better with that treatment. No one should be denied a medical treatment that could benefit them.
