NIH Study Information

The Child Psychiatry Branch of the National Instituttes of mental Health is conducting a study on the effects of sex chromosomes and brain development. The study hopes to answer whether or not childrenw ith XXY and psychosis have brain changes similar to children with other forms of childhood onset psychosis and if brain imaging studies of XXY children with and without psychosis will help uncover ther core biological features of XXY. Those with children ages 4-25, with and without a diagnosis of psychosis, are invited to contact NIMH for participation in the study, Children participating will have a brief physical exam, a blood test (if tolerated), interviews, a laboratory mesure of eye movements, and a brain MRI. Parents will also take the eye movement test and be interviewed about their child and themselves. All results will be made available to families. It is also asked that the child return in 2 years for a followup MRI. All expenses are paid. FOr further information, please contact Tom Fernandez at (301) 435-4503

Note from Carol: We have participated in NIMH studies and would do so again. Also, the study is looking for XYYs as well. Please pass this information on to someone you think might be interested. They really would like to do children with and without mental disorders and the younger the better. If you would like to speak with a family who has participated in such a study, you may call me at (504)347-0598. Carol
